DNP3

DNP3, the utility SCADA standard

Back to all integrations

DNP3 (IEEE 1815) is the dominant SCADA protocol in North American electric utilities, water districts and oil & gas pipelines. ScadaHud is a DNP3 master that talks to RTUs and IEDs over serial or TCP without licensing a third-party stack.

Background

What is DNP3?

DNP3 is a layered protocol designed for reliable polled and event-driven communication over noisy or low-bandwidth links. It supports time-stamped events, integrity polls, unsolicited responses, file transfer, and four object groups (Binary Input, Binary Output, Analog Input, Analog Output, plus counters and time). Secure Authentication v5 (SAv5) is the recommended security layer.

ScadaHud

What ScadaHud's driver supports

  • DNP3 master over TCP and serial
  • Class 0/1/2/3 polls and integrity polls
  • Unsolicited responses with event buffering
  • Binary inputs/outputs, analog inputs/outputs, counters
  • Time synchronization with the outstation
  • Configurable polling intervals per class
  • Auto-reconnect with session restore
Where it fits

Common use cases

  • Electric distribution SCADA with substation RTUs
  • Water and wastewater telemetry (lift stations, reservoirs)
  • Oil and gas pipeline monitoring
  • Renewable energy farm aggregation (solar, wind)
Known devices and vendors

SEL relays, GE Multilin, Schweitzer, ABB RTU560, Schneider SCADAPack, Siemens SICAM, Survalent, OSI Soft, Trihedral.
